I had a man recently tell me he thought that women, naturally being so beautiful, did not need tattoos. Me, with two sleeves full of them. Mine make me feel happy and strong, I said; fierce. Women like me, I suppose, don’t need men who have a set of rules about was makes us beautiful.
I always wonder why men hate tattoos on women so much. I can only guess that it has to do with indignant anger that a woman would dare not conform to his standard of beauty, even going so far as to permanently alter themselves so they can never meet it, a sure sign they don’t want to.
Or is it the nervousness that some women sit like rocks under painful needles, stoic as any macho man? According to all my tattoo artists, women are tougher clients and can go longer and stronger than most male clients.
Does that scare the patriarchy? I hope so.
